Event Overview
Havalad follows the philosophy that anyone can cook. Students will learn to cook both north Indian and south Indian food. She will teach students how Indian food is brilliant blend of flavors, colors, seasoning, fragrance, taste and visual appeal.
In this class, students will cook a simple Indian meal. First they will be a short discussion about the dishes students will make and the spices they'll use. Then it's all hands-on as they cook with friends, a joint activity that's one of the most therapeutic and relaxing things one can do. With guidance from Shoba, the group will turn out a 4 to 5 course authentic Indian meal.
Menu will be as follows:
- Samosas (Veg) - flour tortillas stuffed with spiced potatoes and deep fried
- Chicken Makhani - chicken cooked with fenugreek leaves in creamy yogurt and sour cream sauce
- Dal Fry - cooked lentils seasoned with mustard seeds, cumin seeds and fried onions
- Jeera Rice - fragrant basmati rice cooked with cumin seeds.
After cooking, it's time to sit down together and enjoy this feast. it's a joy to see the camaraderie in the kitchen and at the dining table. It’s a lot of fun!!!
What to Bring
Students can bring ziploc containers to take home leftovers for thier loved ones to enjoy at home. And if students prefer,they can BYOB!

Glenview personal chef Shoba Havalad is a delightful lady who is married to a physician at Lutheran General Hospital. She has two grown sons, one a doctor and the other a chemical analyst. Shoba is an amazing cook and enjoys introducing people to the flavors of India.
Shoba teaches home cooks about Indian spices during cooking classes in her own kitchen. People who have never cooked Indian food are surprised that it’s not as complicated as they thought it was going to be. Most of her dishes, Havalad gently folds ingredients together, stir frying them in olive oil.
Havalad has taken the guesswork out of finding spices too. She makes and sells spice boxes, seven spices arranged in a tiny stainless steel bowls on a round stainless steel closed tray. One of the ingredients in the spice boxes usually includes garam masala, a blend of cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, mace, cumin, coriander, fennel, black peppercorns and fenugreek.
