Event Overview
Do you feel a pull to do something creative but stop yourself before you begin? Do any of these sound familiar: How do I start? What if I don’t do it right? Why should I create something that no one else is ever going to see?
Fear not! These are such common questions and concerns. I designed this hands-on workshop to show you how to begin to incorporate art and creative writing into your life for the first time or after a creative break of any length. Fear stops our creative work before we start. If you would like to learn how to make more art, but you don’t know how to start, the personalized attention in this workshop will get you started.
Come and explore watercolor painting and drawing in a supportive and freeing environment. Creative writing will be incorporated and is meant to deepen your understanding of your own artmaking experience. In this workshop, you will learn:
- Simple and repeatable ways to begin to make art.
- A variety of creative writing responses.
- How to befriend your inner critic.
You will learn how to start making art with no predetermined outcome. This workshop will get your creative juices moving and help you begin.
No previous art or writing experience is required for this workshop. All materials are included, but you may wish to bring a favorite journal for written responses.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST
Laura Reyes is an artist, educator, and coach who helps build wellness through the creative arts. Laura holds an MS in Art Therapy from Mount Mary University, a BS in apparel design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the author of Passing Through, the culmination of her Master of Science research that explores how the art therapy studio experience transforms the lives of homeless and runaway teenagers.
After extensive work with children, families in crisis and organizations, and over a decade of an experience as an art therapist and art educator, Laura realized there is a universal need to give voice to one’s inner experiences through creative expression. From this realization Laura founded her business HeartSplash.
HeartSplash offers a range of workshops, online programs, retreats, and coaching opportunities designed to help expand creative and personal growth by utilizing a unique blend of art and creative writing. Laura loves being a mom and lives with her son in Chicago.

This was a great, non-intimidating introduction to exploring several different mediums of art and experimenting with each in a relaxing way. I really liked the variety (some creative writing, colored pencils, different shapes/sizes of canvas and use of watercolors). Laura is a very warm and approachable teacher, who allows students to create without over-doing it on the instruction, so people can enjoy the process of creativity. I would definitely recommend this class!
