Event Overview

This is a workshop in Design Thinking (aka Human-Centered Design). This is the process we use at EffectiveUI to create software that really works for people. In this day-long class, we’ll have a design problem for everyone to work on.

You’ll be doing hands-on activities all day. We will be leveraging user research, rapid prototyping and user feedback to create a design for a mobile website. In the morning, we’ll give you a design challenge to solve. It will involve bike rentals and a mobile website. We can’t give away the full challenge just yet, but trust us, it will be fun to work on.

You'll be doing research, synthesizing your finding, then moving into rapid prototyping. No coding involved! These prototypes will be sketches. Then you'll do quick user feedback loops to improve your designs. We'll give you tips on all of these along the way.

We’ll wrap up the day by talking about all the techniques you just used--user research, rapid prototyping, user feedback—and how you could apply those to your own work. And if people are up for it, we might just wander over to one of the nearby drinking establishments to continue the conversation.

What to Bring

To fully participate in the research, you’ll want to be prepared to spend up to $12 on a B-Cycle rental. You can still participate if the biking part doesn’t work for you, but you’ll get a lot more out of the class if you do.

Minimum age

All ages welcome

What's Provided

We'll feed you lunch and provide all of the materials you need to participate in the class.

Beth has been doing UX design since the wild and wooly late 90s in San Francisco. She leads EffectiveUI's Education services offering. Through our Education services, we teach others how to do what we do, including basic UX (User Experience) techniques, Design Thinking and our "Making Mobile Work" series.

Beth will be leading up this course along with others from EffectiveUI. This is what we do everyday, and we love it so much, we decided to spend one of our Saturdays sharing the fun with others.

The EffectiveUI staff and the experience were terrific! We reviewed the principles of design thinking and were then guided through a completely hands-on experience of the process. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." This class is a bargain at $40 and an enjoyable way to spend a Saturday!

I had a great time, and the pace of class was great. We spent time in areas that other classes simply cut out and stress "this is important", which really set up the value for me in the 2nd half of the class. Beth and her team were very present and ready to engage to help answer questions and guide you back to the lesson of 'Design Thinking". The interaction with the other participants was great, as we all built off of each other's experiences.
