Event Overview

Transform your favorite mug into an adorable soy wax candle in an interactive candle-making class. The class, led by Chicago candle-maker Jessica Snively, creator of Milton and Margie’s Soy Wax Candles, teaches you everything you need to know to make a soy wax candle in a reused or vintage container.

She’s poured candles in nearly everything that can be described as a “container”—quirkier finds have included a glass cowboy boot, vintage egg cup, honey bear jar, and mug that says “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”—so feel free to go on a thrift-shopping spree before class.

Throughout the process, you’ll create your own signature fragrance from a blend of scented soy-based oils. I’ll supply a bunch of eclectic oils with options from floral (e.g., Lavender and Juniper) to natural (e.g., Cedar and Eucalyptus) and sweet (e.g., Buttercream and Fudge Brownie) to rugged (e.g., Leather).

All the supplies are provided, including wax and fragrance oils. You can bring your own container or purchase one from my collection at class. You’ll get 2 lbs. of wax, and depending on the size of your container(s), you’ll leave with 1–3 completed candles.

The class is held at Paperish Mess, a Chicago art gallery and storefront that sells unique, handcrafted goods. Their adorable shop kitty Misha will supervise the class.

I really enjoyed this class. The wax was super easy to melt and fill the containers with. I took home three decently sized candles. There were tons of scents to choose from. Not sure I really understood the science of which fragrances mixed best with others, but the ones I randomly chose ended up smelling great!

This was my first time taking a class through Dabble. I went with some girlfriends and accidentally bought the wrong date. It was completely my error, but the Dabble team moved me to the correct class without any hassle.

I took the Soy Wax Scented Candle Making class with Jessica Snivley. She was a knowledgeable and attentive teacher, but she also gave us the freedom to express ourselves with whatever scents we wanted to play with. We had a great time and we each made two candles. They all turned out amazing! And they smell wonderful! I was worried mine would be overpowering or just gross, but she explained how to balance scent in a very plane and easy way at the beginning of class, and I don't think anyone had a problem or ended up with a candle that they wouldn't want to burn later. My girlfriends and I can't wait to try this at home on our own. All in all, it was a very good class and I would recommend it to anyone, unless you are sensitive to smell. Once all the bottles got opened up, it was a little intense, but it's a scented candle making class, so you have to expect that going in.

Jess was amazing! So kind, humble, positive, and fun! I love that the class size is small so it's more of an intimate class and she's able to spend time with each of us to create our one of a kind candle! I want to come back every weekend.

Great class! My goal was to learn the candle making process so I can make them right from home, and I totally can. Very positive teacher and she answered all of our questions that we threw at her. I'd definitely recommend this class.

My friend and I loved Jess and loved the class. What we appreciated most was the science behind it- it wasn't just, "mix some stuff and it'll smell pretty!" but really understanding what composes a scent and then how to choose materials to make candles easily at home. Really fun, loved the space the class was held in and would highly recommend!

The Soy Candle making class provided an awesome afternoon of bonding for my mom and I. We had a blast learning to cretae our own scents and complete the whole candle making process. I would recommend this to anyone!

Jessica was amazing! I arranged for the class with my sister in law and her friends for a baby shower. Jessica was so much fun and everyone talked way after the class around how unique and fun it was. On top of that, the owner of Paperis Mess decorated the room for us a variety of cards that were baby themed and it just made the whole experienced perfect. It was the most thoughtful touch!! I look forward to taking another one of Jessica's classes. She is awesome!

It was a small class [6 people + 1 mom who tagged along :) ], so me and my two friends were half the class. This ended up working out well because the space was on the smaller-side and required us to occasionally split into two groups. But we were all together around a table while we mixed our scents and it was fun to see how people's personalities came out in their choices... :D And I felt our end products (for me it was 2 medium-sized candles and 1 mini candle) were equal to the cost of the class/supplies. I love my candles and would definitely do this again!
