Event Overview

For the holidays this year, why don't we take the path-less-traveled and make our own ornaments? Out of hot liquid glass!

This Dabble class is a look into the world of glass working. Learn a little bit about the glass-blowing craft, including: a run-down of the different types of glass art being made today, the tools and equipment used in a glass blowing studio and the properties of glass that make it a unique medium to work with. Then roll up your sleeves and put on your headgear as you learn how to make a one-of-a-kind glass orb.

If the holidays to you look a little more purple and yellow than red and green-- that's okay!-- as each student will choose their own colors and designs to melt, twist and mold into a festive glass globe.

Ornaments will be available for pick up a few days after class, as the glass needs to go through a process called annealing in order to cool properly without shattering and this can take a couple of days.

Kit Paulson has been blowing glass for approximately 10 years, having received her BFA from Alfred University. She has taught glassblowing at studios around the Chicagoland area, including: Making Glass, Chaos Glass, and (currently) Chicago Hot Glass. Kit is a working craftsperson and her own beautiful glass creations can be found at art fairs around Chicago and on Etsy.

Our daughter treated my husband and I to this class for Christmas! I admit, I was a little nervous at first, but Kit was very patient and reassuring! It was great fun, even if I did have to be the first one up!! It was fun to watch all the students glass ornaments transform!

We had a great time with Kit at the glass blowing class! I think she found a great balance between allowing us--the completely inexperienced students--to interact with the hot glass but not shoulder all of the intricacies of the craft. It was a wonderful chance to see the process of glass blowing and has certainly inspired me to want to learn more!

Great class. I went with my wife and two friends, and we all came away thrilled for the opportunity for some hands-on experience with hot glass. There's too much to glass blowing to expect to learn it in one class, but Kit does a good job of holding your hand along the way, and taking care of the most challenging bits. She's an accomplished glassblower and a good teacher, and I really enjoyed learning from her. Note: Kit did the part where you actually blow into the metal rod to get a bubble to form in the fluid glass at the other end. But there's plenty more to do yourself, and if you discover you want to go further, she offers private instruction.

This class was SO MUCH FUN. Kit was a fantastic teacher. She did a really great job of helping, but made me feel like I was doing a lot of the work. I'm planning on signing up for an 8 week class on glass blowing now!

I went with a friend and my sister to this class. Kit Paulson, the teacher, was amazing. She managed quite a large group and had the perfect balance of letting us create the works ourselves and guiding us through the process. I'd take this exact class again, it was such fun.

Awesome time. We have participated in the Valentine's Day Heart one before. This class was so different and a great time especially since we were 2 of 4 people there. Kit is awesome! Very knowledgable, patient and great teacher! I would recommend taking a class with Kit.

This is a relaxing fun experience ideal for a newbie who wants to get a feel for glass blowing. Its definitely a topic of conversation with friends, and I got an ornament out of it too. Kit was more disappointed in my ornament than I am. Actually I like my effort its more of a black anti-holiday ornament, just shows that you should carefully consider the colors and design, and stick with it. Some times less is more.

This is a relaxing fun experience ideal for a newbie who wants to get a feel for glass blowing. Its definitely a topic of conversation with friends, and I got an ornament out of it too. Kit was more disappointed in my ornament than I am. We had such a great time with Kit and were very lucky to be the only ones to show up for class. It was bitter cold outside and being Hot Glass Chicago studio space was the perfect way to heat things up. Being the only two it felt like we had a private Dabble session which was a rare treat. Kit was patient and she really sets it up so you cannot fail and even if you did it would still turn out uniquely yours. This class was awesome! Molten glass is really beautiful. After seeing the demonstration, I thought I'd mess up for sure, but Kit is such a great teacher that actually no one messed up. Instead we got to make super cool orbs of colored glass. Yep, highly recommend.

I had a great time working with glass! Kit is a great teacher, she explained the basics of how the studio works, gave us a rundown of the safety practices, and then we got right into it! She did the parts that require experice and practice, like gathering the glass from the furnace, and the actual blowing part, but everything else is done by the students. Kit is a very encouraging teacher, it's hard to mess up with molten glass, and if you make a mistake, she's right there to help you fix it.

I really enjoyed making my own ornament and getting to know the other "students". I would definitely recommend this class to anyone. If I ever need a party idea, I will consider taking another class at Hot Glass.

When I walked into the studio, I was a little scared. Kit, the instructor, first walked us through the overall process, and then guided us one by one as we each made our ornament. We were able to do a lot of the hands-on stuff, while she handled the more advanced stuff (the actual blowing). It was pretty awesome. I'm excited to see the finished product.

Glass blowing was Amazing! I know it's possible to create expectations that are too high, but this class lived up to all of mine. Our teacher explained everything clearly with a friendliness that made me much less nervous. She gave us several suggestions for possible designs and even explained how I might make my more adventurous design idea work. I left with a gorgeous new ornament, which I excitedly showed off to my family and friends. My fiance and I will definitely be trying glass blowing again.

Anyone that is interested in trying the art of glass blowing will enjoy this beginner class. Note: the instructor does all of the actual 'blowing', but there is plenty of other aspects of the art left for the class to complete. Just try it, it's fun!!

It was bitter cold outside and being Hot Glass Chicago studio space was the perfect way to heat things up. Being the only two it felt like we had a private Dabble session which was a rare treat. Kit was patient and she really sets it up so you cannot fail and even if you did it would still turn out uniquely yours. Kit is a great teacher, she explained the basics of how the studio works, gave us a rundown of the safety practices, and then we got right into it! She did the parts that require experice and practice, like gathering the glass from the furnace, and the actual blowing part, but everything else is done by the students. She began the class by modeling the process we would follow in making our own ornament. She then guided each of us individually through this process. I'm not gonna lie, I was a little apprehensive about creating my own ornament, but Kit was by my side the entire time. I really enjoyed making my own ornament and getting to know the other \"students\". I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.
