12 Have Dabbled
Food & Drink
If coffee is your jam, it's time to take your love back to your kitchen, make micro-batch coffee, and brew it to perfection! This class is taught by Nicholas Novotny of Printer's Row Coffee Company, the newest micro-roaster in Chicago.
Students will learn everything they need to know about how to start home coffee roasting (they will also roast a small batch in an air roaster to see how easy it really is).
No only will you learn several different methods of how to brew coffee at home including: *French Press *Pour Over *Chemex *Siphon *Aeropress *Cold Brew, but you will learn the different variables with each method (grind settings, temperature, etc.), AND you will see how larger batches are roasted on a commercial roaster and take some coffee (~1/2 lb) home with you.
At Printer's Row Coffee Co., we pride ourselves in roasting small batches to ensure each batch is roasted to a level that maximizes the flavor attributes of each particular bean. With a mixture of passion, art, and science, we produce coffee that retains its origin flavors to enhance drinkability.

Nick and Nicole Novotny grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, which is where they met during high school. The two then moved to Akron, Ohio to attend the University of Akron. Nick obtained a BS in biology, while Nicole received a BFA in graphic design. The couple found their favorite places to study were local coffee shops. After undergraduate studies, Nick and Nicole stayed in Akron while Nick continued his schooling. Coffee shops were a daily occurrence, and many friends were made because of the time spent in them. It was during this time when their love of coffee turned into a passion, and the hobby of home roasting became more of a craft. At the time, home roasting was a simple pan on the stovetop, but the desire to learn everything about the process was there, and it drove the two to advance the quality of coffee made at home. After Nick received his PharmD, the then newly-weds moved to Chicago, Illinois, where they discovered an impressive and inspiring coffee community. The two became friends with local coffee shop owners and roasters, and the aspiration to take their home roasting to the next level became too much to bear, so Nick and Nicole decided to start a coffee roasting company. Wanting to pay tribute to their love of Chicago, the company got its name “Printer’s Row Coffee Company” from the Printer’s Row neighborhood of Chicago, the area that the two currently call home. The support from their amazing family and friends, as well as other’s in the coffee industry in Chicago has been fantastic, and Printer’s Row Coffee Company looks to be a staple in the Chicago coffee scene in the loop/south loop soon and for many years to come.
As a coffee novice, this class was both very informative and accessible. The teacher began by talking about how to roast your own coffee beans at home (something I had never contemplated, let alone realized how easy it could be), and then went through five different ways to brew coffee at home. Using the same beans for each different process, and with tastings along the way, allowed the class to get a literal flavor for the different brewing techniques. I highly recommend this class for anyone looking to enhance their coffee-making at home, or anyone who wants to know a bit more about why the taste of coffee varies so much!

I had no idea you could roast coffee in a popcorn maker! A laid-back but thorough review of the roasting process (with some science thrown in) and demos on home brewing. Nick and Nicole are friendly, approachable teachers, and their passion for coffee definitely shined through the whole presentation. I can't wait to brew up the freshly roasted beans we got to take home!
