Education
When we say insect pinning, we're not talking about starting a Pinterest board for all the colorful bugs you find online. We're talking about the much older, cherished tradition of preserving and mounting species of real insects into display cases in the name of observation, research and art.
Insect lovers (or just lovers of pretty things) will learn how to properly pin and display a dried insect specimen in this Dabble class. We'll cover the basics of how and why you should start an insect collection, how to get insect specimens, the collecting and pinning equipment every pinner needs to have, as well as tips and tricks for preparing beautiful, quality works of insect art.
All materials are provided and students will pin and take home their own colorful butterfly or moth.
All ages welcome

A wonderful class! I would definitely recommend it to both the curious and enthusiasts alike. A quick lepidopterology lesson followed by a walk through the butterfly hall and a tutorial on pinning basics left plenty of time for learning by doing! The teacher was very attentive and spread his time evenly amongst the class. Went home with some lovely pinned specimen!

I thoroughly enjoyed the insect pinning class. As an insect pinning at home hobbyist I am thankful for the enthusiasm the teacher had for his job and his class!

I LOVED this class! We got a really interesting entomology lesson to start off and the pinning was really fun. The teacher was super helpful and patient. Then we got a private tour of the butterfly garden. AWESOME all around.

The butterfly pinning class was a lot of fun. Maybe the best Dabble class I've taken so far.

Karen and Allan, the entomologists who taught the class, we're engaging and knowledgable. I had a lot of fun, learned useful tips that I hadn't learned
in biology classes, and got to take home a beautiful, pinned butterfly. I am glad that I invited
friends along too.

I've been to several classes at the nature museum and they are always fabulous! The teachers for the butterfly pinning class were nice, helpful and experts in their field. I got to pin several butterflies and I can't wait for them to dry so I can frame them and show off my new quasi-talent!

This class was great! We were provided with some gorgeous butterflies from the Butterfly Haven at the Museum (don't worry, they died of natural causes!), given a some fascinating background on the history of insect collecting (apparently, a woman entomologist from the 17th century was deemed insane because of her interest in collecting butterflies), and then shown how to turn our butterflies into works of art. The class was very small (only 5 people), so we got lots of individual attention if we wanted it, and we each got to take home two pinned butterflies and a nice shadowbox to put them in. The evening concluded with an after-hours tour of the Butterfly Haven, where we got to see live butterflies emerging from cocoons and flying in the open air. It's an awesome experience, don't miss it!
