Do you have an SLR camera but almost exclusively shoot in AUTO to take your photos? In this class, professional photographer, Dustin Johnston, will teach you how to get away from AUTO and learn how to use your SLR to its fullest potential. You spent a lot of money on a nice camera, so now let's learn how to use it!
We'll begin in a classroom setting with a quick review of photography basics before going into SLR settings and how to use each. Afterwards, we'll get outside (or find a warm indoor location) to put what we've learned to the test. Dustin will then work 1-on-1 to help you find the correct settings and answer any questions you might have about using your SLR.
***Although this class is listed as 6pm - 8pm, the class will continue until 9pm for anyone who would like to spend more time taking photos downtown in the loop.***
In this class we'll cover:
· Review of the basics: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO
· Photo formats: jpeg vs. RAW
· Creating the perfect exposure
· Shooting Modes and when to use each: Auto, P, Av, Tv, Manual
· Other important features: White Balance, Focal Modes, Shutter Drives, Highlight Alerts, Histograms
· Lenses: Which lens should I use/buy?

I learned so much. Although we didn't get outside to practice, I'm glad we spent the time reviewing sample photos and talking through scenarios and best practices. Great information on taking the best photos of my kids who play sports!!

This was a great overview of how to use your camera - and finally figure out what all those buttons actually do! We got a cheat sheet for what the range of settings means and when best to use them and saw examples of photos taken with those different settings to really understand it. The instructor suggested what settings to use as the basic "Go To" settings - that still make use of the smart camera technology built into the device itself - and give very useful adjustments for common situations (lighting, subjects, motion, etc.). It was much more useful than the camera 101 lessons I had previously. Now I need to practice to make sure I've got it down before my next trip.

I was almost sure that I will be not able to get it, because all this professional terminology was too complicated to me. But guess what? Dustin made it! I know everything now! So it's possible to learn it. Must have!

Dustin was thoroughly prepared and the structure of the class was ideal. He starts with a classroom setting then you move outdoors to test out what you've learned. He provides work sheets and take home material for you to reference during class. He's also very hands on and helps you configure the settings on your camera and will critique your photos. This class was perfect for a beginner like me!

This class was fantastic! I've owned a SLR camera for over two years, and I had rarely taken it out of AUTO. Now I leave my camera in Av, and my flash isn't popping up at inopportune times making look like an amateur! The class was very interactive, and Dustin did a great job of explaining the fundamental concepts of aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. At the conclusion of the class we took our cameras outside and applied what he had taught.
Dustin's joy of photography is infectious, and I highly recommend this class. Hopefully he'll be teaching additional classes in the future. If so, I'll be the first to sign up.
