Event Overview

Welcome to the masterclass for the Chicago Pedway.

Mysterious, even to the most seasoned of natives. When I ask Chicagoans if they have been it, the answer is usually a confused "I don't think so? Maybe?"

Come with me on the Chicago Pedway Tour and we will study this strange piece of urban infrastructure going under, around, over and through some of Chicago’s best buildings, without ever stepping foot outside.

You'll see great interiors on this tour. We'll discuss the ill-fated Thompson Center. We'll see gorgeous City Hall and our pride and joy – the Marshall Field Building. We’ll see Tiffany windows and talk history and architecture and all of those great things.

And we'll also talk about the Pedway. We'll dive deep into the map. We'll talk about planning (there isn't any) and governance (there isn't any!) and we'll talk about the Pedway as something deeper than hallways connecting buildings.

I've only lost a few people down there....nothing to fear...

What You Can Expect
  • An all-indoor tour with an experienced (and hilarious!) guide
  • An in-depth discussion of the Pedway and it's future.
  • Cool architecture, history and culture too!

This was delightful. As someone that lives in Chicago and has used parts of the pedway before (often finding it by accident), I loved see the connections and disconnections in its making. I learned a ton and had so much fun! Who knew that there was a museum in the pedway? And how could I not be excited about knowing a back route to the ice skating rink in the winter? Our tour guide knew a lot about Chicago history, the architecture of the buildings we crisscrossed, and everything you could access via the pedway. She IS rad! It's a quirky and fun way to spend a few hours getting to know your city better and how to avoid getting caught in the crowds and rain. I recommend it!
