Business & Technology
In 2005 the founders of Etsy launched its e-commerce site with the mission of bringing makers and buyers closer together -- a perfect antidote in a world of mass production and big box stores. Today, Etsy has reached over 150 countries and hosts a diverse marketplace that features the goods of tens of thousands of sellers.
If you are a hand-made crafter or vintage collector, chances are you want to bring your buyers closer to your unique goods.
Go on a guided tour of Etsy.com with Handmade Educator Rebecca George, who loves helping others sell their art and creativity! Rebecca will discuss what you need to set up a shop, how to get started making your first sales, where to go when you need help and more! Since this is a private lesson, you can also get your questions answered if you already have an open shop.

A Cincinnati native, Rebecca studied Art History & Geology at the University of Michigan. From there, she earned a degree in Fashion Design and Marketing from the American Intercontinental University in London, England. Highlights of her career include having several pieces from her graduation collection featured in the international fashion magazine i-D (UK, Feb. 2007) and working on men’s leather pouches for the movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age (which won an Oscar for Best Costume). Her brand "purpleandlime" is a line of super-fun jewelry and accessories based in Chicago. She has been successfully selling her line on Etsy and in shops for six years, and enjoys teaching others about online handmade selling!
Terrific class. Rebecca was a great instructor: she was easy to understand, provided clear material, and presented a good tutorial of the Etsy basics. I would recommend this class to anyone who is a first-time Etsy seller. I took pages of notes.

Rebecca is very personable, patient and has a wealth of knowledge about ETSY. She went in depth with a lot of the details on using ETSY as a selling platform with tips on what to do and not do. I appreciate her giving me exposure to ETSY.

i am retiring from full-time work in several months and wanted to get a real perspective on what is involved with Etsy, outside of doing the crafting. Believe me, there is much more on the business end than one would think.

I truly enjoyed this class! It was something very different for me because I don't typically take classes that are not in a university setting. However, I loved it! The instructor was really informative, personal, and just full of information. She made the atmosphere very comfortable, and although she had a lot of information to share, she was able to make us laugh, and answered all of our questions. She even stayed an extra half hour to answer any questions. I will DEFINITELY take more of her classes.

There was a lot of information, but Rebecca was able to lay it out in a way that made sense to us. She was very patient with questions and answered thoroughly. I really enjoyed this class and learned much from it.

I'm so glad I took this course. I feel like there was so much information I didn't even know that I would need to know, and now that I am aware of it I am set up for success. I was concerned that the class would be covering a lot of basic information that I already knew, but it wasn't like that at all. It was a lot of very in-depth information that I found extremely useful. Thanks!

First, I will state that I do not yet have a shop on Etsy. This class gave me a jump start on the Etsy concept. I now have a "to-do" list in preparation for opening a shop. The handouts gave me much food for thought regarding how I want to present myself and what I can expect as a seller. The glossary will save me hours of guessing what some of the functionality of the site is: e.g., what's a treasury?? Certainly worth 20 bucks!

Prior to taking this class, I was only familiar with Etsy as a shopper. I knew nothing about the business of setting up a shop. This class provided a good overview of the basics and terminology. The teacher gave her opinion on where to prioritize your time/efforts for the most sales impact (SEO + PRODUCT IMAGES). She also gave our class a code to get 40 free listings.

I was concerned that this class was for moderately experienced Etsy business users, but as a beginner, I felt very comfortable with the information and learned a tremendous amount. The instructor was extremely knowledgable - I'm glad I signed up!

I'm looking to start up my own etsy shop. Loved the Etsy Basics class becuase even though I'm fairly tech savvy, there's a lot of details to take into account. It was nice to have someone with a lot of experience telling me how it works.

Very thorough overview and lots of great visuals and material to support. Great venue! It made me want to go home and get my etsy site up and running!

Rebecca knows the material and is very clear in her presentation. There was very little that I could not have figured out myself, but it would have taken much longer. Her insights on the use of key words was especially helpful.

This class provided a great amount of information and Rebecca was so prepared. She sent us home with invaluable resources for setting up our Etsy shops. Amazing!

Rebecca was very knowledgeable about the inner workings of Etsy and articulated that clearly. I also like that it was conveniently located and inexpensive to attend. The handouts she gave were very nice to have.

Unfortunately I found the class disjointed and confusing. First, there was no clear instruction as to how to find the location. Second, the projector did not work properly and the room was too light for projecting. What was finally projector was a pink picture too small to be seen under the conditions of the projector and room lighting. Third, we were then expected to view the subject being discussed on the instructor's laptop computer-----all seven participants. Finally, the presentation really had no clear structure.

I took this class because I'm looking to start a line of homemade cosmetics and zines that I want to sell through etsy. I was looking for pointers on what makes a successful listing, what shop policies are pretty standard on etsy and how to bring people to my shop. The instructor could have elaborated more on these points. She spent a lot of time talking about the features on etsy - teams, treasuries, profiles etc. which is great but that were already things I knew about etsy. This class would be helpful for someone who has never navigated etsy before as she talked about what each button means. She did talk about keywords and tagging which is helpful for having people find your items but it didn't seem like a sustainable way of creating a brand.
