Note: This is a multi-session event series. By purchasing the event package, you acknowledge that you can attend all event dates included below.This workshop covers the materials and techniques to strip wood furniture in preparation for refinishing. We will focus on stripping chemicals, personal protective equipment, and other materials necessary to safely and efficiently strip the original finish from an old piece of furniture.
This is the first class of a series on advanced furniture restoration. While signing up for all classes is recommended, students have the option of registering only for those classes in which they are interested.
The full class series and schedule is as follows:
Furniture Restoration 102 - Stripping and Cleaning (two days)
Furniture Restoration 103 - Furniture Repair (one day)
Furniture Restoration 104 - Wood Surface Preparation and Staining (two days)
Furniture Restoration 105 - Finishing (two days)
2 day classes will meet on a Tuesday from 6 - 9 for instruction and practice. If students need additional time to complete their project, they will be given one free pass to utilize the MAKE! Chicago workshop space on the following Thursday from 6-9.
1. A small piece of furniture to restore. We recommend a small end table, nightstand, smaller coffee table, console, chair or bench.
2. Comfortable clothing which can get dirty / stained.
A small piece of furniture to strip and practice on, clothes appropriate for a shop environment

Joseph has been a woodworker for over 20 years. He has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his areas of expertise include woodworking, welding, metal fabrication, sculpture, furniture design, and more. He is the founder, owner, and director of MAKE! Chicago, Inc. a Maker Space in Bridgeport.
