Arts & DIY
In this class we introduce students to the proper tools, materials, and woodworking techniques to set up and turn wood on a lathe.
Turning is a fun, easy way to create a variety of items. With the skills gleaned from this class you can just about anything cylindrical - candle holders, table and chair legs, mallets, fancy pens, etc. It's a great way to make unique gifts for friends and family, repair furniture, and more.
The project of the day will be to create a simple candle holder. We shall demonstrate a variety of different carving tools and how to create various shapes on the lathe. Students will then have the opportunity to rough out and refine their own candle design, with a great deal of creative control on the final product.
All ages welcome

Joseph has been a woodworker for over 20 years. He has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his areas of expertise include woodworking, welding, metal fabrication, sculpture, furniture design, and more. He is the founder, owner, and director of MAKE! Chicago, Inc. a Maker Space in Bridgeport.
This was the second wood turning class I took with Joseph, and both have been excellent. I had a great time trying out all the different tools and experimenting with different shapes, and made a neat, space-age-looking candle holder in the process.
