Arts & DIY
MAKE! Chicago is a Maker Space with woodworking, welding, sculpture and metal fabrication tools.
During Open Shop Time, guests may have access to our tools and space to create their projects.
A monitor is available to advise and assist as needed. However, the activity is intended to be self directed. Guests should come prepared with a clear plan of what they intend to make, and be versed in the tools and techniques they intend to use throughout the activity.
Limited consumables are available if needed such as screws and glue. But it is expected that guests will bring in their own materials and consumables.
If you have a larger DIY project you've been meaning to get to and just dont have the space in your condo, if you have a piece of furniture you would like to restore or repair, if you need to weld a part back on your metal patio furniture, Open Shop Time is your time to get things done, and receive the support you need.
Guests may arrive and go anytime between 6pm and 9pm. But we recommend getting to the shop as early as you can to make the best use of the space and get your money's worth.
Prerequisites: You must have been through the shop authorization and signed a waiver to enter the space and do work. If you have not, we will do a brief authorization at 10 am.
Advice: Choose a single project to execute. Do some research. Make a plan. And gather up all materials in advance. Email us in advance if you have questions. We are here to help you be successful.
All materials you will need to complete your project(s) for the day, and a PLAN.
All ages welcome
It is strongly recommended that you have undergone our safety orientation, and have some skills and experience with the tools you will need to use, before you come to use the shop. We offer a free orientation on the Last Tuesday of every month, from 7pm - 8:30pm
If you can't make it on the last Tuesday, please contact us to work something out at MAKEChicago@gmail.com
We stock a limited supply of screws, glue, tape, stains, fillers, sandpaper, etc. But bring your own consumables such as wood, metal, stains and finishes, and specialty hardware. Especially if you're going to need a lot.

Of course I brought my own project, so I was pleased to get it almost finished. There were only a couple of us there, so there was no trouble with overlapping machine use. Joseph was there to ask for suggestions and opinions, and he was really helpful.
