Alright, alright...we know Chicago gets a bad enough rap sometimes and classes that promote knives and needles probably don't help BUT add pie from BANG BANG Pie & Biscuits and host the gathering of curious folks in the Herb Garden at their Logan Square location and all is good!
Knife throwing!?!?!? Yep. Learn the basics of knife throwing. No experience is necessary but ages 13+ please! Throwing knives is incredibly addicting...and a lot like throwing darts but we use 14-inch steel knives and it feels REALLY good when you get the hang of things! Sharpen your hand eye coordination, impress your friends or just have a great time! We will be covering knife throwing basics, what to look for in a good throwing knife and just having a good time.
After we kick-off throwing knives and get through the super fun safety instructions, our partner-in-craft, Joslyn Villalpando of J.Villa Workshops, will introduce the craft portion of the evening and you'll have an opportunity to practice your newly acquired knife throwing and embroidery skills for the rest of the evening.
Embroidery is the art of using thread to embellish fabric, and has come back in unique, contemporary ways. We'll be using pie themed stamps so you can pre-design your own tea towel to stitch up and then I'll show you the backstitch and satin stitch so you'll be on your way to mastering embroidery! We'll be stitchin', chatting, throwing knives & snacking on pie! You don't need an ounce of experience to join us for this beginner level (also great for experienced embroiderers) workshop.
All ages welcome
You should probably like pie but we'll eat your piece if not.
All throwing knives, needles and a pattern will be provided

Jemal Swoboda is an ultra-runner, fiddler & an all-around jack-of-all-trades - when he is not throwing knives he runs Dabble! Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Jemal loves exploring his new city - Chicago.
Joslyn Villalpando is a working artist and art educator in Chicago. After studying fine art and art education at the University of Cincinnati, she spent 7 years teaching elementary art. While teaching, she completed my master's degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), studying the impact of craft and fiber art on art education. Her small research group of young participants grew into a little community while learning to weave, sew, embroider, and dye; sharing the stories, memories, thoughts, and ideas that arise when creating together.
There's nothing better than gathering with others to make something by hand, learning skills and processes that can be used again and again. At each J.Villa gathering, you will experience a thoughtfully curated event in an inspiring space, hand selected and/or handmade art materials, and enthusiastic guidance through the craft process.
The combination of knife throwing and embroidery was perfect for date night! Both teachers were friendly and knowledgeable! I highly recommend you take a class from either teacher! I went mostly for the embroidery workshop portion, but now I'm interested in knife throwing too.

I recently got interested in throwing knives, and my girlfriend is a fiber artist. This Dabble Event couldn't have been more perfect. From the location (mmm Bang Bang Pie), to the activities, it was all great. I had a lot of fun throwing knives and, with an open mind, realized how relaxing the needlework stuff was. The overall night was very fun, entertaining and memorable. I would do this again, no question.

Who can pass up a title like knives and needles? This was such a nice night at bang bang pie in Logan Square. The embroidery portion was super cute. You got to design your own tea towel, learn basic skills and then take home your towel, hoop and some extra thread to continue crafting. The knife throwing portion was also a lot of fun and not intimidating at all. Plenty of time for everyone to try out their new skills plus we got to eat some delicious pie. The instructors were very nice and helpful. Grab some buddies and book this activity the next time it pops up. It's a fun night out!
