Event Overview

We are so thrilled to team up with Dabble to dress up in pink and red, drink a froufy pink cocktail, eat some pie, and bring you a Valentines craft gathering. Join us at a beautiful Breather event space in the West Loop for a Valentines Day party! Not only will you learn some new skillz to create some fab valentine cards, but we’re also partnering with some of our favorite Chicago vendors, Lost Girls Vintage and Laurie's Finds to bring you a unique pop-up shop with some lovely goods.

Sam Handel will be back to teach you pointed pen calligraphy. You'll learn the basics and practice in a worksheet booklet so you're ready to write on your valentines. Joslyn Villalpando will show you the art of block printing to create your own stamp to use. We've got some ready made samples for you to use, featuring some of our own favorite puns (olive you!) or you can scour the internet for some good ones and come ready with ideas.

To take us way back to elementary school, we'll have some heart-shaped candies and tape if you want to attach them to your cards to send something sweet. Remember those kids who gave you a valentine, but no candy? We don't want you to be them.

We'll set up a photo booth to capture the fun, and Cocktail Courier will be there to share a seasonal cocktail with us. Plus, we’ll munch on pie from Bang Bang Pie Shop as we work. What more do you need to celebrate love? Grab your honey or a group of girlfriends and come party with us!

ABOUT THE VENUE: Breather offers well-designed and flexible spaces so you can do your best work. With a capacity of 1-40 people, their spaces are perfect for your next off-site or focused work. Each space has its own lounge area where you can take a break in the middle of an intense brainstorm or simply change your mindset.

My name is Joslyn Villalpando and I am a working artist and art educator in Chicago. After studying fine art and art education at the University of Cincinnati, I spent 7 years teaching elementary art. While teaching, I completed my master's degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), studying the impact of craft and fiber art on art education. My small research group of young participants grew into a little community while learning to weave, sew, embroider, and dye; sharing the stories, memories, thoughts, and ideas that arise when creating together.

After witnessing the beautiful community that is built when creating with friends, I first began holding craft and cocktail parties to spread my love of the handmade with my favorite people. We gathered to learn how to block print to make valentines or embroider to create holiday ornaments- each craft accompanied by a featured batch cocktail and treats, of course. Inspired by the old sewing circles and expanding on the theme of intimate, creative social gatherings, I am moving these parties from my tiny Chicago condo and hosting craft events at some of Chicago's most beloved bars, restaurants, coffee houses, boutiques, and cupcake shops. I love utilizing classic, traditional art/craft processes such as; weaving, embroidery, printmaking, and watercolor, and putting a contemporary spin on them to bring you a unique learning experience.

There's nothing better than gathering with others to make something by hand, learning skills and processes that can be used again and again. At each J.Villa gathering, you will experience a thoughtfully curated event in an inspiring space, hand selected and/or handmade art materials, and enthusiastic guidance through the craft process.
