Have you ever considered travelling to another part of the world to explore and learn about another culture through food? If so, you’re in luck!
This class will whisk you to the sights, smells and tastes of Chinese cuisine and culture in Chicago's Chinatown. You’ll experience the delicious dim sum offerings as they fly by on traditional carts and get a tour of the neighborhood to learn about:
- The Nine Dragon Wall, a Chinatown landmark beautifully decorated with nine dragon
sculptures.
- The Chinatown mural, made of hand-painted tiles depicting the history of the Chinese immigration
to the United States.
- Chinatown Square, filled with sculptures of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
- Wentworth Avenue, the historic commercial district, filled with shops, restaurants, and historic
landmarks.
What to bring
Dabblers should come with an appetite, good walking shoes and openness to experiencing new cultures.
The materials fee is the cost of the neighborhood tour and dim sum brunch which will include drinks and tip.

Joelen Tan is a Chicago area private caterer and former restaurant chef behind the 'What's Cookin, Chicago?' website. Joelen has been recognized in both local and national media and has worked with celebrity chefs including Rick Bayless, Spike Mendelsohn, and Marcela Valladolid. Since 2007, she has been teaching culinary classes, hosting culinary events in Chicagoland and does recipe development work with major food brands including Sara Lee, Pepperidge Farms, Campbell's, Kraft, Frito Lay and Starbucks to name a few.
