Event Overview

A Clamshell box is a remarkably sturdy and useful structure that can be used as an ideal housing for a portfolio of prints, photos, artist books, memorabilia, or tools. During this workshop students will construct a 6"x8" clam shell box, and through this project, acquire the skills needed to make additional or customized box structures on their own.

Students will also get to make a create “perfect bound” sketchbook to accompany their handmade box. To allow each student to create a box that suits his or her style, we will not be providing the decorative paper that will cover each box.

What to Bring

Students need to bring two sheets of decorative paper, approximate 22”x30” to cover their boxes.

Minimum age

All ages welcome

What's Provided

We will provide all other supplies, including glue, brushes, book board, and exact-o knives

What a great class! I'm so pleased with my clamshell box! Nicolette was a great instructor ... friendly, clear in her descriptions and patient. She made time to go around to check all of our work so that she knew we were on the right track. Class was fun and it was really cool to make something functional (and professional looking!) that I've never made before. I highly recommend this class!

I really enjoyed this class. The teacher had experience and was very friendly. Most of the box pieces were pre-cut but this saved time and she did a good job explaining how to figure out the measurements for doing your own cutting. And we did get to practice cutting by trimming some of our own pieces-- is tedious work, so I'm glad we had them ready to go. The box I made turned out beautifully and I feel like I would be comfortable trying to make another one on my own. I might also try some of the other classes offered by this center.
The class was very long, I'm glad I brought a snack. There is no where nearby to get food or coffee, FYI.
My only disappointment is we didn't have time to make the "perfect bound book" that was supposed to go with the box. We ran out of time. Although making the class longer would be too much. I had fun but was very ready to be done when it was over.
