Event Overview

Why do some spices taste better together? Spice blends create an exciting culinary experience by combining individual spice elements together to form a unique new flavor profile. Some properties of spices are activated when eaten together (like turmeric and black pepper) and other spice mixes represent the staple spices of specific cultures (like garam masala or berbere). In this demo class, sponsored by The Spice House (www.thespicehouse.com), instructor Sarah Mallin will teach you how to create new exciting flavors in your home cooking by understanding the history of spices, and why certain spice pairings go so well together. You’ll get to concoct and take home your own spice mix and we’ll have lots of spice-filled drinks and snacks on hand for sampling.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Sarah Jane Mallin is an artisanal pie maker and versatile chef. She fell in love with growing and cooking food as a child while working on her grandparents’ 1,000-acre farm in Ohio. Even though she has attended classes at Le Cordon Bleu, The French Pastry School, and The Chopping Block, Sarah learned the most valuable lessons about cooking from her mother and grandmothers. She founded her pie making and wellness company, Pyrite Sun, to enrich connections between how we breathe, eat, and grow. Sarah’s cooking classes invite you integrate how you prepare, eat, and experience the food you make. Rather than merely following a recipe, you will learn simple ways to be creative, confident, and engaged in the process of nourishing yourself.
