Participants will take part in the step-by-step process of choosing and preparing fabric for dyeing, learning how to create a dye vat with local materials, as well as how mordants work to fix color and increase light-fastness. The colors produced by natural dyes vary depending on the mordant and fabric used. The class will cover dyeing wool, cotton, and silk with an alum mordant made from rusty nails! Each participant will dye a set of 4 cloth napkins.
